JOB TITLE:  ASC Peri-Operative Registered Nurse (Surgery Center

REPORTS TO:  ASC Surgery Center Manager

                                      

FLSA STATUS:  Non-exempt

JOB OVERVIEW:  Provides safe, quality patient care in the Peri-Operative area (Preop, Recovery or OR).  Accountable for the assessing, planning, implementing and coordinating patient care from admission to discharge. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

 

1. Assesses patient status on admission to the preop area, the operating room and/or the post-op area,

    and on a continuing basis.

2. Provides safe, therapeutic quality care to patients utilizing the nursing process and nursing diagnosis

    in a timely manner and by setting appropriate priorties.  Coordinates nursing interventions to

    enhance achievement of expected outcomes and to ensure readiness for discharge.  Documents

    interventions and patient's responses.

3. Ensures provision of patient care in an organized and timely manner.

4. Utilizes nursing care standards when planning and implementing patient care.

5. Communicates appropriate information reguarding patient conditions to thoses who require the

    information including, surgeons, anesthesia, mangement and other staff.

6. Safely carries out physician's orders correctly and promptly, documenting all activities.

7. Initiates and participates in patient and family education.  Assesses learning needs according to

    patient's level of understanding and readiness to learn.

8. Displays an understanding of each patient's cognitive, physical, emotioal and chronlogical maturity in

    assesments, treatment and care.

9. Takes part in pre and post-op phnoe calls and communicates any problems to the appropriate

    person.

10. Maintains compentencies to function in RN role within specific area. (Ex. OR circulator -

      Identification, counting and care of instrumentation and sponges, skin preparation of surgical site).

11. Maintain competencies in conscious sedation administration and monitoring of sedated patients. 

      Including airway protection, assessment and support of sedated patients.

12. Protect sedated and anesthetized patient by identifying safety hazards such as electrical,

      equipment, pressure points and by minimizing exposure to maintain privacy and body temperature.

13. Expertise in safety principals, asepsis, sterile technique and universal precautions.

14. Assesses, anticipates and implements appropriate care through out the surgcal process.

                

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1. Correlates clinical data with nursing care.  Provides the patient with care mesures congruent with

    his/hers age, sex and health issues.

2. Excellent organizational skills and attenetion to detail, prioritizes work to meet the changing needs of

    the department.

3. Document and perform nursing care in assigned area based on standards of care and practice, and

    TDC policies and procedures.

4. Adhere to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards of confidentiality,

    Infection Control, safety (OSHA), attendance, punctuality and personal appearance.

5. Serve as a role model and mentor, providing direction and leadership to other staff.

6. Demonstrates understanding of established emergency procedures for the Center.

7. Demonstrates the ability to direct and provide for patient care in emergency situations.

8. Demonstrates the ability to make decisions concerning Center based problems.

9. Participates in the orientation of nursing and ancillary staff as requested.

10. Participates in developing standardized patient education programs.

11. Participates in Quality Improvement activities including identification of opportunities for cost

      reductions and efficiencies.

12. Works to achieve and maintain regulatory certification and accreditation of the Center.

13. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for professional practice and for continued

      professional growth and development through printed material or other sources and by attending

      in-services and seminars as appropriate.

14. Must be willing to flex work hours as needed and/or requested by Manager. 

15. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Certification/Licensure: 

    • Maintains current State of Washington RN licensure
    • Maintains CPR certification
    • ACLS and PALS certification preferred. Required in PACU/POHA

 Experience:

  •  Two years of Pre-Post Operative or Operating Room experience, preferably in an ambulatory surgery center setting.

 

Skills:

1.           Ability to apply and modify the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to

              provide on-going patient care.

2.           Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

3.           Ability to identify problems and recommend solutions.

4.           Ability to develop and maintain department quality assurance.            

 

 Other Requirements:

1.           Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to give and evaluate patient care.

2.           Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care.

3.           Knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot a variety of medical equipment and instruments to

              administer patient care.

4.           Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.

5.           Ability to react calmly and effectively in busy or emergency situations.

6.           Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.

7.           Ability to communicate effectively and in an individualized manner, in the English language in

              person, by phone and in writing.

8.           Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, management  

             and peers.

 

Physical Requirements:

    • Hearing:  Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone.  Able to use stethoscope and respond to verbal questions.
    • Speaking:  Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone.
    • Vision:  Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of patient and reading information from printed sources and computer screens.                       
    • Other:  Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, including assisting patients when required.  Adequate physical ability including sufficient manual dexterity to perform the requisite health care service, including injections. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift.  Requires exposure to communicable diseases and/or bodily fluids.
