JOB TITLE: Surgical Technologist REPORTS TO: ASC Manager FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt JOB OVERVIEW: Responsible for identifying, securing and demonstrating proficient utilization of instrumentation, supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures. Performs a variety of other duties as a member of the TDC team. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
1. Expertise in safety principles, asepsis, sterile technique and universal precautions. Applies and shares knowledge with others. 2. Perform all scrub technologist functions for all cases done in surgery center. 3. Ability to perform surgical technologist functions according to AORN recommended Practices and Center Policies and Procedures. 4. Knowledge of, and ability to, disinfect, clean and sterilize, surgery center instruments, equipment, and supplies utilizing the appropriate processing equipment, such as ultrasonic cleaner, washer-disinfector, Steris and Autoclaves. . 5. Ability to prioritize and have excellent organizational skills with attention to detail. 6. Ability to work effectively in stressful situations.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1 Set-up required operative fields, arranging instrumentation, equipment and supplies appropriately according to the Surgery Center’s policies and case preference cards. 2. Prepare for scheduled procedures by picking cases, utilizing surgeon’s preference cards. Labels cases and prepares “needs list” accurately. 3. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and other members of the surgical team. 4. Handle specimens appropriately per Center policies and procedures. 5. Demonstrates care of delicate instrumentation by proper handling and storage of instruments used on assigned cases. 6. Assist in surgery suite maintenance including case preparation, turn- over, instrument processing and terminal cleaning. 7. Assist with inventory control and stocking of supplies. 8. Assists in the orientation of new personnel. 9. Acts as a resource person to other members of the staff. 10. Participates in the Quality Improvement Program activities including identification of opportunities for cost reductions and efficiencies. 11. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for professional practice and for continued professional growth and development through printed material or other sources and by attending in-services and seminars as appropriate. 12. Adhere to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for confidentiality, Infection Control, safety (OSHA), attendance, punctuality and personal appearance. 13. Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduate of an accredited training program. Certification: CST Required. CPR certification. Experience: Minimum two years surgical experience, ASC experience preferred. Skills: 1. Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills in order to facilitate effective interaction with health care professionals, coworkers, patients and families. 2. Ability to wok with minimal supervision and have the capacity to organize and prioritize work. 3. Prior knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment 4. Ability to flex hours as needed and/or requested by ASC Manager.
Physical Requirements: Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties. Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly. Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties. Other: Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds unassisted, including assisting patients when required. Adequate physical ability including sufficient manual dexterity to perform the requisite health care service. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift. Requires exposure to communicable diseases and/or bodily fluids.
